Cruising with the Kids
Cruises are a great way to spend time with the family in a safe environment that offers virtually something for everyone in your family, including kids. Sometimes, traveling with kids also means less time with your spouse, but it doesn't have to.
There are many activities for your kids to enjoy with and without you, and several ways to ensure you or you and your spouse get some quality time alone together. Several cruise lines offer strong kids programs, so if you're traveling with children, be sure to do the research. Disney and Royal Caribbean are two examples of kid-friendly cruises.
Book your cruise when children are on vacation, such as winter holidays, spring break, and the summertime. It may be a mite more expensive, but there will be other kids to meet and play with, so friends are pretty much guaranteed. There are a number of activities for them to do, such as arcades, movies, pool games, camps, and more depending on the ship you're on.
Look into a kid's onboard day camp. Some cruise lines like Royal Caribbean offer kid camps, and they are a great way to keep your kids entertained and ensure that they have a good time. Make sure to check age requirements for the camp before you cement your plans. Don't be afraid to ask questions about what they offer for infants, if you can leave your kids there while in port, if you need to get them at lunch, and any other questions that come to mind. There is usually a child/parent orientation session that allows you to meet with staff, get to know them, and ask any questions or pose any concerns you might have.
Another option that may be available on some ships is an in-cabin babysitter. Most cruises have this option in the evening, so it is worth checking into. They will normally have you fill out a request for the times you will need someone, and the same person will do your sitting all week. This can cost a little more, but if you can afford it, it is definitely worth it.
Make early dinner plans, as kids can't often wait for the later meals. This also allows you to enjoy family time and go out afterwards as a couple if you desire.
Another excellent idea if you're going on a cruise with kids, or even as a couple, is to bring walkie talkies. Since phones don't work on board, this is a great way to check in and stay in touch at all times. This also applies if you get an on board baby sitter-you can take a walkie talkie and leave one with them so you can check up on your kids when you need to.
Cruising with your kids is often fun, and with careful planning and the right ship, you can make time to enjoy your vacation as a couple as well as a family. Your kids will have a great time and enjoy their vacation, and so will you.
