Looking for the perfect July getaway and can’t make up your mind? How about considering fabulous Lake Tahoe? The city is found high in the Sierra Nevada mountains with a gorgeous picture postcard alpine lake setting. The city straddles Nevada and California, and many visitors fly into Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) and then head to Tahoe, less than an hour’s drive.
Be prepared for stunning mountain scenery, with towering pine trees surrounding sparkling Lake Tahoe which boasts a surface area of nearly 200 square miles. During July you will experience an average daytime temperature of about 80 degrees, with low humidity keeping things comfortable; evenings cool off enough for light jackets or sweaters, due to the high elevation. The average precipitation in July is miniscule, so every day can be experienced to the max.
Outdoor recreation abounds in Lake Tahoe, as you would expect. Many of the magnificent ski resorts continue operations in the summer, offering all kinds of ways to get outside and play. Hike or mountain bike along endless trails, winding through forests and bringing you jaw dropping views of the lake, valleys and cliffs. A cool way to get high in the sky is to ride the Heavenly Mountain Gondola or an aerial tram ride at Squaw Valley, each of which will leave you absolutely breathless in wonder.
Water recreation is extremely popular, too. Lakes are open year-round for fishing, and streams and rivers are also open during July. Boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, parasailing, jet skiing, kayaking and lake cruises are all available. River rafting excursions really get going in July, a perfect way to enjoy the outstanding scenery with your whole family. You can take a leisurely float or double down on some rushing whitewater rapids – it’s up to you!
Did you know that Lake Tahoe offers one of the very best Fourth of July experiences in the country? The Lights on the Lake Fireworks show is renowned, easily seen from many places around town as well as from the water. One favorite viewing spot is at Nevada Beach, a sandy shoreline location where folks barbecue and picnic, then settle down for the display.
During July you also have the opportunity to attend some really fine annual events in Lake Tahoe. Golf lovers, you are in luck! The American Century Celebrity Golf Championship Tournament’s dates are July 17-22, giving you the chance to shake hands with some of the most famous athletes and stars, plus watch some really fantastic golf. This tourney attracts incredible names; some who plan to play this year are Aaron Rodgers, Joe Theismann, Michael Jordon, Jason Kidd, Brett Hull, Greg Maddux, Kevin Nealon, Ray Romano, and the perennial favorite, Jack Wagner. This event is really a lot of fun!
Another popular attraction is the Summer Concert Series which is held at Harveys casino’s Outdoor Arena. July’s lineup includes Chicago and The Doobie Brothers on July 13, The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour on July 15, and Maroon 5 on July 21. Journey, Pat Benatar and Loverboy join up to rock you out on July 22, with country music superstar Brad Paisley shredding his guitar on the 28th. What an incredible selection of concerts!
The 2012 season of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival gets started July 13 through August 26 with The Two Gentlemen of Verona, a family-friendly production featuring the Bard’s comedy at its best, complemented by a live onstage band and gorgeous costumes. A Broadway on the Beach performance is offered in conjunction with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra on July 16; western favorites are offered by the orchestra on July 23, and the Sierra Nevada Ballet presents Giselle on July 30. Culture is alive and well in Lake Tahoe!
Of course, gaming action brings many visitors to Lake Tahoe. You can enjoy table games such as blackjack, roulette, craps and baccarat, exciting poker rooms and endless slot machines to keep you entertained 24/7.
