Allium Sativum by the Beach
Attention lovers of the aromatic stinking rose: the 13th Annual Garlic Fest is coming soon to Delray Beach, Florida! February 10 – 12 is the weekend and the site is downtown Delray Beach on the grounds of the Historical Old School Square. This odiferous festival is assembled each year by a group of “Volunteer Stinkers” and it's time for you to see (and smell) what all the fuss is about!
Welcome to “The Best Stinkin' Party!”, a 3-day ode to the clove which has raised $300,000 benefiting local charities! As you might expect, the fest hosts cooking demonstrations featuring foods containing the fragrant ingredient – head to the Garlic Chef Stadium for entertaining expositions including the ever-popular Garlic Chef Competition. Specially-selected culinary masters compete before judges who score their fragrant dishes. This year’s competitors include Anna Marie Vocaturo of Café de France, Chris Miracolo of Max’s Harvest, Todd Holender of Latitudes at Sunset Key and Executive Chef Anthony “Radar” Risoli of SoLita. Come see what these chefs have up their sleeves to impress the judges this year!
Gourmet Alley is the aromatic place to be at the festival, where you can nosh on practically endless garlic-inspired foods. Try mouthwatering dishes including garlic bruschetta, garlic chicken quesadillas, garlic chicken curry, garlic jerk chicken and even garlic ice cream! You can also relax with your favorite beverage at the Cloves & Vines Wine Garden. The Garlic Oasis Bar is located at Crane's BeachHouse Hotel & Tiki bar this year. If you really enjoy your food and drink, this is the fest for you!
Live entertainment is offered as well, assuring you of a fun atmosphere for family and friends alike, with a jam-packed Main Stage schedule. Friday offers the Fabulous Fleetwoods at 6 pm and Uncle Kracker at 8:30 pm. Saturday’s entertainment begins shortly after noon with Andy Childs, the Jay Blues Band, the Marshall Brothers Band and Outside the Box, with G. Love & Special Sauce performing at 9 pm. Andy Childs kicks off at 12:30 on Sunday, followed by Journey, Bon Jovi and Billy Joel tribute bands.
Send the kids back to school – the festival's Garlic University offers fun educational opportunities along with kids club projects (free!) to keep the kiddies entertained. This fest is definitely family-friendly!
Would you like to take a memory of your good time with you? There is a vendor area of booths containing all sorts of unique gifts and gadgets, many garlic-related. Maybe the annual commemorative poster is just what you need to cheer up your rec room!
The festival begins at 4 pm on Friday, reopening again on Saturday and Sunday at 11 am. Tickets are only $10! Five dollar parking is available at the Old School Square and the South County Parking Garages, with free parking at City Hall. Full details can be found at the festival's website.
