Getaway to the Arts
Looking for a little cultural stimulation – and maybe a little warmer climate? A ten week art festival, Arizona Fine Art EXPO has developed into a premier event, attracting over 100 outstanding artists and great crowds of art lovers from across the country. The event takes place in North Scottsdale, utilizing 44,000 square feet of white tent space, five miles south of Carefree and next to MacDonald’s Ranch – you can’t miss it!
This exciting Art EXPO is produced by Thunderbird Artists, well known for over 30 years for its excellent organization of award-winning art and wine fests. This particular festival was begun in 2005, presenting a unique experience combining a fine arts gallery feeling with artists creating pieces at the same time. You can even commission a piece, then watch the artist create it before your eyes!
Some of the art world’s most gifted talents will be on-site, producing literally thousands of pieces of art. Their passion is infectious, and you will be drawn into their world of art mediums, from pen and ink sketching, to clay sculpting, to carving wood. Watch fine jewelry and pottery evolve, with stunning pieces being created all around you. Etching, painting, drawing, sculpting and more are all to be found here. Make no mistake, this is a first-class show, with nationally acclaimed artists who have won a multitude of awards.
The Arizona Fine Art EXPO serves as a tool to educate the public, including children, as well. You can interact with these talented artists, plus participate in hands-on art demonstrations and workshops. There will be a Café serving beverages, burgers and snacks to help you keep your energy up, too!
In addition to the art-filled tents, there is a two-acre sculpture garden which displays contemporary, traditional and abstract pieces created from bronze, copper and clay. A Koi pond, lovely bridges and a stone waterfall complete the garden, creating a soothing oasis amid the heart of the Sonoran Desert. Weekends are special times, with live musical entertainment complementing the beautiful setting. Other Expo activities include art classes, workshops, and book signings.
This year’s festival begins January 19 and extends to April 1, so you have plenty of time to make plans. You can stay in Scottsdale if you like, or consider Tempe, just 22 miles to the south, or even Phoenix, which is about 33 miles to the southwest of the EXPO grounds. Scottsdale’s attractions include galleries, studios and museums in Old Town, upscale retailers at Fashion Square Mall and outdoor recreation at Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Arizona State University’s Performing Arts Center, Gammage, and a lively downtown district make Tempe a place for great entertainment. Hiking up Camelback Mountain or the 1.2 mile summit trail to Piestawa Peak, walking trails at the Desert Botanical Garden or browsing American Indian exhibitions at the Heard Museum are all popular activities in big-city Phoenix.
Unlimited passes to the EXPO are offered, with discounts available for seniors and military; children under 12 are free. Hours are 10 am to 6 pm daily, and free parking is available. You can learn more at the Art EXPO website. Escape the winter weather and head to sunny Arizona for this great annual art fest extraordinaire!
