Virginia Overview

Capitol Building Richmond VA US Hotels

With a mild climate and mid-Atlantic coast setting, Virginia is one of the country’s favorite vacation destinations. Add in the fact that it was instrumental in the founding of the U.S. as well as in the Civil War, and visitors can enjoy an amazing selection of historic sites dating from the 1600’s as well as an amazing selection of Virginia hotels.

Richmond’s capitol building was designed by no less than Thomas Jefferson (8 Presidents hail from Virginia!); browse the 1.25 mile long Canal Walk for a history lesson extraordinaire. Two hours southeast you will find the largest city in the state, Virginia Beach, right on the Chesapeake Bay. This resort city combines with Norfolk and Newport News to create a metro area population of over 1.5 million, and attractions abound, including historic lighthouses and plantations to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. National surfing, soccer and beach volleyball contests are held here as well.

Midway between Richmond and Virginia Beach is the very popular Colonial Williamsburg Jamestown Settlement area where you can experience living history portraying the lives of early settlers. Arlington is located in the very northeast corner of the state, just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. The National Cemetery, The Pentagon and many other federal agencies are headquartered here. The history of the area is memorialized in a great number of landmarks and parks throughout the state. Manassas National Battlefield Park, site of the first battle of the Civil War in 1861, is only a half hour west of Arlington. Shenandoah National Park features 75 overlooks with amazing views along the scenic Skyline Drive, and 500 miles of trails for hiking. The park is a couple hours northwest of Richmond.

The Virginia State Park system has been voted “best” in the nation, a testament to the value placed on preserving and enjoy the outdoors year-round. Considered one of the finest in the nation, Douthat State Park in the George Washington National Forest offers Alleghany Mountain scenery, miles of hiking trails (some of which open to mountain bikes) and trout fishing in a 50-acre lake. Grayson Highlands State Park, in southwestern Virginia, is adjacent to Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Experience guided canoe trips, horse trails and trails leading to amazing vistas, waterfalls and a centuries-old cabin. As the song goes, “Carry me back to Old Virginia” – this will be your tune after the best vacation ever!
