Tennessee Overview

Gatlinburg TN US Hotels

The three stars on the Tennessee flag represent its 3 regions: East, Middle and West. Considered one of the most beautiful states in the U.S., an exploration might begin with the Middle, as that is where the capital city Nashville may be found. The intersection of three major interstate highways has contributed to the growth of this area into a city of over a million, offering a plethora of Tennessee hotels. Country Music’s Grand Ole Opry and Hall of Fame draw millions of visitors each year, and the Nashville Superspeedway’s NASCAR events are popular as well.

Switching from country to rock-n-roll music, travel to the far southwestern corner of the state to find the largest city, Memphis. With a setting on the mighty Mississippi River, Memphis is known for mouthwatering BBQ, the Blues and Elvis Presley’s home, Graceland. Hang on Beale Street for live music and a party atmosphere every evening. Knoxville, also a large urban center, is located in the northeastern corner; a quick hour’s drive to the southeast brings you to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and picturesque Gatlinburg. This entire area is a tourist draw, with popular theme park Dollywood, the Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort and first-rate whitewater rafting on the Big Pigeon River.

The Scenic City, Chattanooga, is found in the southeastern corner of the state. Visit Lookout Mountain to see Ruby Falls, a 145-foot underground waterfall, or check out the Tennessee Aquarium.  Shiloh National Military Park preserves the site of the bloody, 1862 Civil War Battle, with an extensive system of plaques and markers. The park is about 2.5 hours from either Memphis or Nashville. Fall Creek Falls State Park, equidistant from Nashville or Knoxville, boasts the highest waterfall in the eastern United States, cascades, gorges and streams amidst 20,000 forested acres.

Considered the first Gateway to the West, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park preserves for all time the trails, scenic vistas, forests and streams. Take a ranger-led tour of Gap Cave or take some time to inspect the historic Hensley Settlement buildings; this park is located north of Knoxville at the Kentucky state line. Whichever region of Tennessee you choose to explore, you will undoubtedly be back for more!
