Hartsville, South Carolina, is a small town that is rich in history and is very concerned about sharing their history with others. The town was built up on the plantation of Thomas Edward Hart; the town was named after him. When the town was very young, agriculture was a very important aspect of its economy; now, however, agriculture is a small portion of its economy. Most of the town’s wealth now comes from manufacturing and packaging plants as well as a power plant that is located in Hartsville. When visiting the small town, be sure to stop by the Hartsville Museum. It’s housed in a restored post office that was originally built in 1930. Also, check out Butler Heritage. This museum is located in a restored train depot that has been around since 1908. It has tons of information about the early 20th century and is definitely worth a look.
