One such landmark is Hopsewee Plantation, a plantation that was built in 1740. The house is a typical rice plantation dwelling, and the plantation is a preservation rather than restoration. It had never been allowed to decay and is in very much the same state as when it was first built, so you’re truly able to step back into time to the 18th century. The Georgetown Lighthouse is by far the most popular landmark. The current lighthouse was built in 1867; it’s the oldest active lighthouse in South Carolina. You can only reach it by boat, and there are several tours that will take you to the island by ferry.
