Barnwell is a historic town that, like many of its sister cities, has a passion for horses. Horseracing is very popular in Barnwell and the towns surrounding it. One piece of history that creates an atmosphere in Barnwell is the Circle Theater. The Circle Theater was originally the first Presbyterian Church ever built in Barnwell. The first church services were held in 1845, and the church remained active until the late 1960s. In 1967, a committee was formed and voted to build a brand-new church. However, some of the church members wanted to save the historic building from destruction. They formed the Barnwell County Historical Preservation Commission, and the church was placed on the National Historic Register. Volunteers worked hard to restore the church. In 1974, the Circle Theater play group became the tenants of this landmark. They added a stage, renovated theater seats, and added a carpet. The performances that are held there now receive great help from the history of the building. The ambiance and atmosphere adds to the plays, helping to create an intimate setting for play goers to enjoy.
