South Carolina Overview

Charleston South Carolina US

Golf emerald green courses, tour antebellum mansions, laze on sandy white beaches or visit one of 47 state parks. There’s a lot to do in South Carolina! Columbia is centrally-located and the largest city in the state. Visitors enjoy touring the State Capitol building, boating and fishing at Lake Murray and spending time at nearby Congaree National Park, which features towering, old-growth forest, canoe tours and 20 miles of backcountry hiking trails.

A 2 hour drive north will bring you to Cowpens National Battlefield, where you can see Revolutionary War artifacts, walk Green River Road and learn about the battle which turned the tide of this war. In the early 1900’s, a number of sophisticated homes were built in Thoroughbred Country around Aiken, about an hour southwest of Columbia. Referred to as the Winter Colony Historic District, a few of these mansions may be toured.

The Low Country is represented in Charleston, situated where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers pour into the Atlantic Ocean, about 120 miles southeast of the Capital. This area is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, and you can find great deals on South Carolina hotels in this area. Charleston was a prosperous Civil War-era city, and much of her history and southern gentility is preserved in an extraordinarily popular Historic District; handmade sweetgrass baskets and carriage rides are iconic local images. Charleston Harbor’s Fort Sumter National Monument memorializes the eruption of the Civil War.  Golf enthusiasts enjoy superb courses at nearby Kiawah Island or Sullivan’s Island. The Citadel Military college is located here as well.

For a true vacation destination, enjoy the pounding surf and grassy dunes at Hilton Head Island, 95 miles south of Charleston. Myrtle Beach is just one of the Grand Strand of beach towns lining the South Carolina Coast; besides the obvious beach and water activities, this family-friendly destination offers golf, shopping, amusement parks and casino ships for gaming action. South Carolina is a dream destination. It’s time to make that dream come true!
