Iowa Overview

Capitol Building Des Moines IA

Best known for being influential in nominating Presidential candidates, Iowa is a good representative of Midwestern life and values. Family-friendly Des Moines is the capital city; consider an Iowa Hotel in downtown, which features a cool, interconnecting skywalk system between hotels, restaurants and shopping venues.  You can hike or bike along the River in Des Moines to enjoy its natural beauty, or really get into nature by paddling the Iowa River Water Trail which stretches from Iowa City (two hours east of Des Moines) 72 miles to the Mississippi River.

On your way to the Iowa River Trail, be sure to visit the Amana Colonies, seven preserved German villages over 150 years old. You can sample local foods and craft beers and browse quaint galleries and museums.  Thirty-seven counties in Northeast Iowa comprise the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area where you can explore the rural life at dairy farms, museums and vineyards.

Less than an hour drive north of Des Moines brings you to Ledges State Park which showcases sandstone formations rising almost 100 feet above the streambed and 13 miles of trails giving you awesome views of the canyon at Pea’s Creek. Waubonsie State Park, in the extreme southwest corner of the state offers scenic views of three other states while the Effigy Mounds National Monument at Harpers Ferry in the far northeast corner exhibits more than 200 ceremonial and sacred American Indian mounds. Visit the Hawkeye State to experience friendly hospitality!
