When you combine racehorses with Kentucky bluegrass and a little whiskey what do you come up with? Lexington. This city, named by patriots for the Revolutionary War battle, boasts rural beauty beyond compare with plenty of Lexington Kentucky hotels available. Scenic drives in the rolling countryside are one of the most popular tourist activities, enjoying farm after farm, fenced in brilliant white.
Located at the intersection of I-64 and I-75, Lexington is served by Blue Grass Airport (LEX); many visitors choose one of the nearby Lexington KY hotels for convenience. The Colt Trolley system is available when downtown, but most visitors find a car convenient for exploring horse country. Of course, tours are available as well.
Lexington is known as the Horse Capital of the World, offering equine lovers scenic drives through Bluegrass Country, Horse Farm Tours, and Thoroughbred Racing at Keeneland Race Course. Lexington was chosen as host to the World Equestrian Games in 2010 as the first ever U.S. site, quite an honor. Plan to visit Kentucky Horse Park to see 50 different breeds of horses. Of course, the tradition of mint juleps while attending the annual Kentucky Derby should be experienced if you are lucky to be in Lexington.
History buffs have numerous sites to visit, including the birthplace of President Abraham Lincoln and Henry Clay’s estate, Ashland. Waveland State Historic Site preserves 19th century plantation life; tours of Daniel Boone’s grandnephew’s Greek revival home and its grounds may be toured.
Culture may be found at the Kentucky Ballet Theatre as well as Broadway Live at Lexington Opera House. If you are coming to town specifically to see a performance, you can search for a nearby hotel at a discount using the Attraction tab at the top of this City Guide! Families enjoy the Explorium of Lexington with nine discovery zones of inspirational exhibits to get kids’ creative juices flowing.
Sports fans fill the stands for the University of Kentucky teams which play in the Southeastern Conference at Commonwealth Stadium and Rupp Arena. The men’s basketball Wildcats are legendary and they have always attracted well-known coaches.
Other local experiences include touring restored Shaker community, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, which is a National Historic Landmark as well as exploring one of four local Kentucky bourbon distilleries.
